India’s Stand on the World Sustainable Development Summit 2022

Energy Access for All

  • Ensuring that equal energy access for the underprivileged remains a fundamental part of India’s environmental policy has successfully upheld its commitments.
  • These included projects like the Ujjwala Yojana scheme, which provided clean cooking fuel to 90 million homes nationwide.
  • Additionally, the PM-KUSUM initiative was initiated to encourage farmers to install solar panels to utilize and sell excess power to the grid, promoting sustainability.

Coordination in Actions

  • The global commons requires collective action to stay sustainable. India’s efforts have identified this dependence.
  • Through the International Solar Alliance, India intends to achieve “One Sun, One World, One Grid.”
  • To guarantee that renewable energy is always accessible from a global grid, the entire world must work collectively. India’s ideals promote a “whole of the world” outlook.
  • Additionally, it urged nations to follow internationally recognized legal norms while considering the values of equity, shared but differentiated roles, and respect for each other (acting on climate change based on national circumstances).
  • Without the world nations’ adherence to equity and each of their fair contributions to the global carbon budget, the Paris Agreement targets will not be met.

Restoring the Degraded Land Areas

  • Nearly 11.5 million hectares of degraded land have been restored since 2015, making this one of the main priorities.
  • India is on track to fulfill its national commitment to Land Degradation Neutrality under the Bonn Challenge.
  • India is determined to fulfill all its obligations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The nation also expressed its goals at CoP-26 in Glasgow.
  • For instance, India has announced that it will become carbon neutral by 2070.

Developing Infrastructure for Resilient Island States

  • The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (C.D.R.I.) works to improve infrastructure in areas with a high frequency of natural catastrophes.
  • Alongside CoP-26, India also unveiled its “Infrastructure for the Resilient Island States” initiative.
  • The island developing states are highly vulnerable and need urgent protection.

Ramsar Sites

  • India’s efforts have been acknowledged by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), for the nation currently has 49 Ramsar sites (wetlands) spanning more than 1 million hectares.
  • India is a country that is very rich in diversity. Despite taking up only 2.4% of the planet’s land area, India is home to around 8% of the world’s species.

Reducing Emissions

  • Discussed the distribution program for LED bulbs (UJALA), which has been in operation for more than seven years, has saved nearly 220 billion power units and has prevented 180 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
  • The National Hydrogen Mission intends to utilize green hydrogen, for which academic and research institutions like TERI were tasked with providing solutions that could be scaled up.

Initiation of LIFE- Lifestyle For Environment Initiative

  • Adopting environmentally friendly lifestyle habits is what LIFE is all about. LIFE is a global alliance of like-minded individuals determined to foster sustainable lifestyles.
  • The 3Ps, or Pro Planet People, will be the title by which they’ll be known.

Concluding Remarks
  • The widespread occurrence of extreme weather events has highlighted the tight link between human well-being and the planet's health.
  • The attainment of broader sustainable development goals must coexist with just and fair enforcement of climate and environmental policies.
  • The present state of the planet’s health and the socioeconomic challenges brought on by the pandemic require a review of the issues concerning global aspiration and strategies for sustainable development.
  • Responses to the pandemic must be appropriate for both people and Planet Earth and should be seen from the perspective of planetary resilience.
  • It is important to plan for the changes that human activities and competition over resource use may bring to reduce future conflicts and promote a more healthy relationship between society and its environment.
