Causes Of Rise Of Temperature Of The Oceans

The sun and atmosphere warm the ocean in several ways. The most direct source of heat is sunlight. Short-wave radiation from the sun easily penetrates the ocean surface. Some of this radiation bounces back into space while the rest gets absorbed by the water, heating it up.

  • Scattered radiation from the sky also contributes to ocean warming. When sunlight hits the atmosphere, it scatters in all directions. Some of this scattered light reaches the ocean surface and provides extra heat. The amount of scattered radiation depends on factors like cloud cover and the sun's position in the sky.
  • Other processes heat the ocean from within. Heat slowly rises from the Earth's interior through the ocean floor. Energy from ocean currents and tidal movements also converts to heat. Chemical reactions in seawater and air-sea exchanges of heat further influence ocean temperatures.
  • But the ocean doesn't just gain heat - it also loses it. Some of the infrared radiation emitted by the ocean's warm surface bounces back into space, cooling the water down. Heat transfers from the ocean to the overlying atmosphere, driven by temperature differences. Evaporation of ocean water carries away large amounts of heat. Together, these cooling mechanisms set an upper limit on ocean temperatures.

Ocean temperatures have many determining factors. Sunlight provides the basic heating, but geography, ocean circulation, and humans influence exactly how warm or cold waters get. Understanding ocean temperatures is important due to their impact on climate, weather systems, ocean currents, and marine life.

  • The sun is the primary heating source. Solar radiation warms surface waters while deeper layers slowly absorb heat from above, creating vertical temperature variations. However, other factors redistribute this heat horizontally, resulting in different surface temperatures across regions.
  • Latitude plays a major role. The equator receives the most direct sunlight, so surface waters are warmest there. Moving away from the equator, sunlight hits at an angle and heats less water, causing temperatures to decrease. The Northern Hemisphere also has more landmass, allowing oceans to absorb more solar radiation and become warmer.
  • Winds also impact ocean temperatures. Offshore winds drive surface waters away from the coast, replacing them with colder deep waters in a process called upwelling, which cools the surface. Conversely, onshore winds pile warm surface waters against coastlines, increasing temperatures there.
  • Ocean currents redistribute heat around the globe. Warm currents like the Gulf Stream transfer tropical heat to higher latitudes, while cold currents cool areas down. Horizontal Distribution

Ocean temperatures vary significantly across latitudes and seas. On average, surface waters are warmest at the equator at 80°F and then cool as you move toward the poles.

  • Temperatures fall by around 0.5°F for every latitude. At 20° latitude, they're 73°F; at 40° they're 57°F; and near the poles, they're 32°F.
  • Northern hemisphere oceans are generally warmer due to more landmass. The highest temperatures aren't exactly at the equator - they're a bit north. Globally, average ocean temperatures are 63°F.
  • The north averages 67°F while the south averages 61°F. Unequal amounts of land and water cause this difference.
  • In the Atlantic, temperature decline with latitude is slower in the north due to warm currents. The averages are still 41°F between 50-70°N. The drop-off is steeper in the South Atlantic.
  • The warmest waters are around 5°N while the coldest are near the poles at 80–90° latitude. Average Pacific temperatures are slightly higher at 60°F. The Indian Ocean averages 60.6°F.
  • The lowest temperatures of around 36°F are near New Scotland. The highest, around 90°F, are in the western Pacific. Arabian Sea/Bay of Bengal waters in the Indian Ocean average 82.4°F, but enclosed seas like the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf reach higher - up to 94°F.
  • Ocean surfaces are generally warmer than the overlying air, emitting heat that drives currents and waves. For example, air 8 meters above the Atlantic between 20–55°S is 0.8°C cooler than the surface.
  • This difference in temperatures between air and ocean causes sea fog as warm air passes over colder waters. Sea fogs are common at higher latitudes but rare in the tropics and usually form in spring/early summer when land air is warmer.

Vertical Distribution Of Temperature In Ocean

Ocean temperatures vary greatly with depth. Surface waters are warmest since they directly receive sunlight. Temperatures fall rapidly with depth but at a non-uniform rate.

  • The top 200 meters, receiving sunlight, is called the photic zone. Below that lies the aphotic zone with no sunlight.
  • Though surface temperatures fall toward the poles, temperatures on the ocean floor remain uniform. This means temperatures decline faster near the equator.
  • Offshore winds cool surface waters by upwelling cold deep water, lowering temperature decline with depth. Conversely, onshore winds accumulate warm surface waters, causing faster temperature drops at depth.
  • In some areas, deeper waters are warmer, like the Sargasso Sea, Red Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean reaches 86°F at 6,000 feet deep, but the Indian Ocean is just 35°F at that depth.
  • There's a layered thermal structure in temperatures. In lower latitudes, a warm upper layer stretches to 1,600 feet thick. A cold lower layer lies below 3,300 feet. Between is a transition zone called the thermocline from 1,000-3,300 feet.
  • Seasonal thermoclines form in the top 100 meters in summer due to sunlight heating. Diurnal thermoclines exist in the top 50 feet. Polar seas only have one cold water layer from the surface to the seafloor.
  • In summary, sunlight heats surface waters, but temperatures fall steeply with depth. Latitude, winds, circulation, and geography shape how rapidly temperatures change at varying ocean depths - ultimately determining what temperatures marine life experiences.

  • The temperature of the oceans also dictates what types of marine life can survive. Even small changes in the temperature of the oceans can profoundly affect coral reefs, plankton, and fish populations.
