Discharge of a negotiable instrument can occur in several ways, such as payment in due course, cancellation, material alteration, or allowing drawee more than 48 hours to accept.

A holder is the person entitled in his name to the possession of the negotiable instrument. In contrast, a holder in due course is a holder who receives the instrument for value, devoid of any suspicion of a defect in the title of the transferor.
