What is Mind-Body Dualism?

Mind-body dualism is the idea that the mind and body are different from each other. It says that mental things and physical things are not the same. In the realm of the philosophy of mind, mind-body dualism refers to the perspective that mental phenomena are either non-physical or that the mind and body are distinctly separate. This encompasses various viewpoints concerning the connection between mind and matter, as well as the relationship between subject and object. It stands in contrast to alternative positions like physicalism and activism within the mind-body problem.

Where Did Mind-Body Dualism Come From?

The idea of mind-body dualism has been around for a long time. Here are some important people who talked about it:

Plato laid some of the earliest foundations for the dualist viewpoint. He believed that the human soul - the nonphysical mind or spirit - represents a person's true self. Meanwhile, the physical body is merely a temporary vessel for the soul.

Aristotle disagreed with many of Plato's ideas, but he still posited a distinction between mind and body. He theorized that the human intellect has two parts: the potential intelligence that can gain knowledge and the active intelligence capable of thought.

René Descartes is arguably the most prominent historical proponent of dualism. He asserted a sharp distinction between res cogitans (thinking substance, i.e. mind) and res extensa (extended substance, i.e. body). For Descartes, the immaterial mind thinks, while the physical body occupies space. They interact through the pineal gland.

Arguments for Mind-Body Dualism

People who believe in mind-body dualism use different arguments to support their ideas. Here are some of the main ones:

  • The Causal Argument: Dualists say that mental things have a different kind of power than physical things. Thoughts and desires can make things happen in a way that physical things can't. This shows that the mind and the body are different.
  • The Intentionality Argument: The mind can think about things and have thoughts that are "about" other things. This is not easy to explain using only physical things. So, the mind must be separate from the body.
  • The Phenomenological Argument: Some parts of our experiences, like seeing colors or feeling pain, are not easy to describe using physical things. This shows that the mind and the body are different.
  • The Language Argument: We use different words to talk about mental things and physical things. We talk about beliefs, desires, and sensations that don't fit easily into physical terms. This shows that the mind and the body are different.
  • The Knowledge Argument: We can think of things about our conscious experiences that physical theories can't explain. This shows that our knowledge of the mind goes beyond what the physical world can explain.
  • The Zombie Argument: We can imagine beings that are physically the same as us but don't have conscious experiences. This shows that consciousness is different from physical things.

How Does Mind and Body Interact?

One big problem for mind-body dualism is how the mind and body can interact if they are different. This is called the problem of mental causation.

Dual ists have come up with different ideas to explain how the mind and body can interact:

  • Occasionalism: Some dualists, like Malebranche and Descartes, suggested that God constantly steps in to make the mind and body work together. So when you decide to raise your arm, God makes the changes in your brain and muscles to make it happen.
  • Pre-established Harmony: Another idea introduced by Leibniz, is that the mind and body were created to work together perfectly. They run parallel to each other without directly affecting each other.
  •  Epiphenomenalism: This view suggests that mental states are just effects of physical processes. The body causes the mind, but the mind doesn't have any real power to cause things in return. Most dualists don't agree with this idea.
  • Parallelism: Some dualists believe that the mind and body run separately but side by side. They don't interact with each other at all. However, most dualists find this hard to believe.
  • Interactionism: The most common belief among dualists is interactionism. They think that the mind and body interact with each other. For example, when you decide in your mind, it causes physical changes in your body that make your arm move. But it's still not clear how this interaction happens because the mind and body are so different.

Critiques of Mind-Body Dualism

There are some criticisms of mind-body dualism:

  • Mental Causation: It's hard to explain how a nonphysical mind can cause things to happen in a physical body. This is a big challenge for dualists to figure out.
  • Explanatory Gap: Dualism can't fully explain how physical brain processes give rise to subjective mental experiences. It's hard to bridge the gap between what happens in the brain and what we feel and experience in our minds.
  • Lack of Mechanism: Dualism doesn't offer a clear explanation of how a nonphysical mind can be connected to a specific body. It doesn't provide a mechanism for this connection.
  • Vagueness: The idea of a nonphysical mind is seen as unclear and not well-defined. It's not clear what it really means or how it works.
  • Lack of Evidence: There is no concrete scientific evidence that proves the existence of nonphysical minds or separate mental phenomena that exist without a body.
  • Superfluous: Some people argue that dualism doesn't add anything useful to our understanding of the world. They say that physicalist theories, which believe that everything is physical, can explain things just as well without needing to posit nonphysical minds.
  • Holism: Some argue that the relationship between the mind and the brain is one of interdependence and interconnectedness rather than separate substances.
  • Monism: There are alternative views, like physicalism and idealism, which propose that there is only one fundamental substance or reality, avoiding the difficulties of dualism.

Other Philosophers on Mind-Body Dualism

Thomas Hobbes: He didn't believe in dualism. He thought that thoughts were just movements in the body, not something separate.

John Locke: He thought that the mind had its special qualities, no matter if it depended on the body or not. This is a kind of dualism, too.

Gottfried Leibniz: He talked about "monads," which are special things that can change the physical world. He believed that they were different from physical things.

Enlightenment Thinkers: People like Hume and Kant had some problems with Descartes' ideas, but they still thought that the mind and body were different.

Alternatives to Dualism
  • Instead of dualism, there are other ways to conceptualize the relationship between mind and body:
  • Physicalism: This view posits that only physical things truly exist. On this account, the mind emerges from or supervenes the physical processes of the brain. Mental phenomena are regarded as byproducts of physical interactions rather than fundamentally distinct from matter.
  • Idealism: Idealists say that only minds or mental things truly exist. They believe that the physical world is dependent on the mind and doesn't exist independently.
  • Emergentism: This idea suggests that the mind emerges from the physical world but still has its own distinct properties. Mental things cannot be reduced to just physical things.
  • Property Dualism: This view accepts that there are different properties of the mind and body, but they are not separate substances. Mental properties depend on or are determined by physical properties without being reducible to them.
