About IRDAI

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India is a statutory body established by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority Act 1999. It was constituted as an independent body, initially headquartered in New Delhi. Its headquarters were relocated to Hyderabad, Telangana in 2001. The Government of India appoints the Chairman and other members of IRDAI. It derives its powers and functions from the IRDAI Act 1999 and the Insurance Act 1938. Its main objectives are to ensure healthy competition in the Insurance sector to improve customer satisfaction through more choices and fair pricing as well as guaranteeing the market's financial stability. The Insurance Act of 1938 is the prime law controlling the Insurance sector in India and which gives the IRDAI the authority to make regulations to overview the regulatory framework for the sector.

The mission of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India is as follows:

  • To ensure that real claims are settled quickly, frauds and other malpractices are prevented, and an effective grievance redressal system is ensured.

Composition of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India

The composition of IRDAI is laid down under Section 4 of the IRDAI Act 1999. It includes

  • Chairman
  • Five whole time members
  • Five part time members

IRDAI Functions

As per the preamble of the IRDAI Act, the goal of IRDAI is to “defend the interest of holders of insurance policies to regulate, promote and ensure the orderly expansion of the insurance industry in the country. An Insurance Advisory Committee involving representatives from trade, industry, transportation, etc, in the Insurance sector is to be established under section 25 of the IRDAI Act. The main functions of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India are defined in section 14 of the IRDAI Act 1999. The main functions are:

  • To issue licenses to insurance intermediaries and reinsurance companies.
  • To safeguard policyholders interest.
  • To specify requisite qualifications, code of conduct, and practical training for intermezzos.
  • To require information from, inspect, and conduct inquiries and investigations of entities connected with the insurance business.
  • To establish the form and method in which insurance and other insurance intermediaries must keep books of accounts and render statements of accounts.
