Why is Bharatiya Antariksha Station in the News?
India's space exploration ambitions have widened, with fireworks raised over the Bharatiya Antariksha Station. On 17 December 2020, the government, in a statement by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), announced that India would construct and run the station by 2028. This is a significant step for India to become a deep actor in space.
The space station will be utilized for testing new technologies, microgravity experiments, and training astronauts for long-duration missions. India will carry out significant research in the station and support future missions to Mars and the Moon.

About the Bharatiya Antariksha Station (BAS)
Bharatiya Antariksha Station will be the first-ever Indian Space Station. It is to be located in lower earth orbit; i.e., around 200 km to 2,000 km from the earth. The space station will house astronauts for extended time in space and conduct their experiments. It will also allow scientists to learn more about the possibilities of human habitat and working in space for long durations.
The Bharatiya Antariksha Station space station is being built by ISRO, which has accomplished a lot of things in its flawless chain of missions, such as the iconic Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan missions. The space station will be under the Gaganyaan Mission, with the aim of sending Indian astronauts for the first time to space.

The Bharatiya Antariksha Station wishes for India to become the pioneer in space research. Key Features and Specifications of Bharatiya Antariksha Station
Bharatiya Antariksha Station will also be a sophisticated space station. Some of the major features of the station are:
- Orbit: The space station shall be moved to LEO or low Earth orbit, 200 to 2,000 km from Earth.
- Size and Structure: Space station would include several modules or chambers as landing astronaut habitable and research venue, which has three to seven astronauts capacity in any given moment.
- Mission Duration: These astronauts would stay on board for 15 to 20 days for each mission, where they would conduct experiments, technology demonstrations, and research SC in microgravity (where objects appear to be weightless).
- International Cooperation: The station will also accommodate foreign astronauts to collaborate their research.
- Research Areas: Some of the many research to be conducted on the station are: space health of human beings, space agriculture--space growth of plants--and novel materials and technology for use in future space experimentation.

The biggest achievement that India is going to make in relation to her space mission is developing a space station. The following are the main reasons why the space station is so important:
- The station will also enable India to acquire experience in different advanced technologies viz: onboard life support systems for the breathing and survival of astronauts in space, space navigation with different aids, and communication technology.
- This space station will also be used to conduct scientific experiments — some of which will provide gigantic amounts of data in the areas of space, human health while traveling into space, and zero-gravity materials science.
- The construction of this space station will provide India with a blood-red footprint in space exploration and present an opportunity for co-operative missions with other countries in the future.
