Atal Tinkering Labs are established under the NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission(AIM) to promote curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds as well as to impart new age skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing, and so on. Setting up of Atal Tinkering Labs in J&K – To foster a creative mentality among high school students Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) and NITI Aayog will develop over 500 Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. With the establishment of these 500 labs, J&K -will become the first state/UT to establish Atal Tinkering Labs in partnership with NITI Aayog.

What is Atal Tinkering Lab?

Atal Innovation Mission aims to cultivate one million neoteric innovators among children in India.

It establishes Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs) in schools nationwide. The scheme's goal is to nurture curiosity, creativity, and imagination, imparting skills like design thinking and computational skills. ATL serves as a hands-on workspace where young minds shape their ideas and learn innovation skills. Children engage with tools and equipment, understanding STEM concepts (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

ATL features DIY kits on science, electronics, robotics, open-source microcontrollers, sensors, 3D printers, and computers. Desired facilities include meeting rooms and video conferencing for educational purposes. ATL conducts various activities like competitions, exhibitions, workshops, and lecture series to foster inventiveness among students.

Objectives of Atal Tinkering Lab

The Government of India has initiated Atal Tinkering Lab projects with the following key objectives given below:

  • To design workspaces where young minds could learn innovation skills, develop ideas through hands-on activities, and work and learn in a flexible setting.
  • To inculcate in our youth new age talents such as creativity, innovation, critical thinking, design thinking, social and cross-cultural collaboration, ethical leadership, and so on.
  • To assist in the development of innovative solutions to specific problems, and thus to promote India’s attempts to grow as a knowledge economy.
  • To create an ecosystem in India that encourages innovation.

Eligibility for Aatal Tinkering Lab

The eligibility criteria based on different parameters for the establishment of the Atal Tinkering Lab is as follow :

  • Minimum Land availability for lab area should be 1,500 sq. ft. in plains and 1,000 sq. ft. in hilly / Himalayan and island states/UTs.
  • There should be the facility of Computer Lab with internet facility, Electricity connection, Science Lab, Library and Playground

No. of Students

  • There should be a minimum of 400 students enrolled in plain area and 250 in hilly areas along with minimum 75% attendance of staff and teachers in the last 3 academic years.

Faculty Requirements

  • There should be dedicated and expert qualified staff of Maths & Science.

Performance of

Students

  • Percentage of students scoring 60 – 69.99%, 70 – 79.99%, 80 – 89.99% and 90% and above in Class 10th & 12th board exams in previous 3 years will also be checked.

Extra-Curricular activities

  • Participation of Students in Science-related events and fairs will also be checked.

Scope of ATL

The Atal Tinkering Lab has been set up in 87% of districts, including 110 Aspirational districts, leading to the creation of 5000 laboratories nationwide. These labs are present in both government and private schools, with a significant presence in co-educational and girls' schools, serving as community centers for innovation. AIM has undertaken efforts to establish more than 10,000 ATLs by the year 2020.

Financial Support By Atal Innovation Mission

The Financial support given to the schools under the Atal Innovation Mission for Atal Tinkering Lab projects is given below:

What is STEM ?

  • The acronym STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
  • The acronym of STEM was coined in 2001 by scientific administrators of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).
  • Curriculum is a teaching system that combines all four disciplines into a single, cross-disciplinary program.
  • Constitutional Provisions related to STEM in India –

Article 51A: It is the Fundamental duty of every citizen of India to develop a scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform.

Major Features of Atal Tinkering Lab

The Atal Tinkering Lab was launched by the Government of India with the following major features as discussed below:

  • They provide students the opportunities to understand complex principles of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) field.
  • They provide advanced facilities of educational kits and equipment for electronics, science, robotics, sensors, 3D printers, and open-source microcontroller boards.
  • ATLs organize national and regional level competitions, problem-solving workshops, exhibitions, product design and production, talks etc.
  • These labs offer modern upgraded facilities like video conferencing, audio-visual rooms, and meeting rooms.
  • They have tools to impart practical learning.

Packages for Atal Tinkering Labs

There are four different types of packages under Atal Tinkering Labs which provides multiple tools and equipment for innovation and research purpose.

Package 1

  • It contains electronic tools and gadgets, and it serves as the foundation for a large portion of the Atal Tinkering Labs project.
  • It comprises kits related to robotics, biotech, sensor, Arduino, Joystick etc. The majority of the projects in this package will be built on Arduino.

Package 2

  • It contains a 3D- Printer and equipment related to 3D printing.
  • It comprises of equipment like printers, core boards, filament storage boxes, 3D-printer, etc.

Package 3

  • It contains electronic and mechanical prototypic tools such as a hammer, drilling machine, welding machine, digital oscilloscope, multimeter sewing machine, etc.
  • Package 3 facilitates tools that are needed to design a physically working prototype.

Package 4

  • It contains all of the medical supplies required to keep students safe while working on technological tasks.
  • It comprises of Latex Coating Gloves, Safety Goggles for Chemical Splash and Smoke from Soldering, Safety Goggles for Chemical Splash and Smoke Soldering etc.

  • It will assist students in exploring and experimenting with their scientific abilities.
  • It will bring out the best in students of grades VI to XII by providing a number of experiments and possibilities for them to perform and learn.
  • It will aid in the advancement of knowledge about the most recent trends and innovations.
  • The pedagogy used in ATL will make STEM subjects simple and understandable for students.

About Atal Innovation Mission

Atal Innovation Mission(AIM) is a flagship initiative of the central government with the objective of creating and promoting the ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship across the whole country.
