Getting to Know Seedling

A seedling is a young plant sprout that is born from the embryo within the seed. The germination of the seed sets off the development of the seedling. Generally, a seedling consists of three main parts –

  • The radicle, also known as the embryonic root
  • Cotyledons, commonly referred to as seed leaves
  • Hypocotyl, the embryonic shoot.

After the cotyledons have sprouted and risen above the ground, they begin to form plumules. These are shoot structures that will eventually grow the first true leaves of the plant. Once the leaves have fully formed, the cotyledon will naturally fall off. The growth of a seedling can be influenced by various factors such as light, temperature, wind, and physical touch.

Understanding Sapling

A sapling, on the other hand, is a young tree that is typically between 1 to 6 inches in diameter. Unlike seedlings, saplings have adult leaves instead of seed leaves. Although saplings can also develop from a seed like seedlings, they are typically a more mature form that no longer has seed leaves. Moreover, saplings can also propagate through vegetative parts using stem cutting techniques.
