JEE Main Number of Attempts Till 2018

Till the year 2018, the JEE Main was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

During those days, only one attempt per year was possible however, a candidate can appear a maximum of 3 times consecutively in his/her lifetime.

Till the year 2010, the JEE Main was held in the Pen-Paper mode, that is the offline mode.

Till the year 2017, there was an option to opt for either the Pen-Paper mode or the Computer Based Test, that is the online mode. Since the year 2018 till now, the Computer Based Test is made mandatory.

The total number of marks awarded was 360 and the number of questions asked was 90 where each question carried 4 marks and a negative mark of -1 for each incorrect answer.

Since the year 2019 till now, the conducting body for the JEE Main is National Testing Agency (NTA), the NTA has amended some rules regarding the appearance of students in the JEE Main.

Till the year 2018, the JEE Main was hosted only a single time a year but in the year 2019, NTA declared that the JEE Main will be held twice a year. The first session for the JEE Main 2019 was held in January followed by the second session in April. Back then the total marks awarded was 360 with 90 questions, there wasn’t any change regarding the marking scheme.

In the year 2020, NTA implemented some major changes in the JEE Main exam timing and exam pattern as well. The year 2020 was marked by the COVID-19 Pandemic, due to this exceptional situation the first session for the JEE Main 2020 was held in January but the second session which was scheduled in April was postponed to the first week of September. Apart from that, the total marks awarded in the JEE Main was 300 with 90 questions where only 75 questions are to be answered, previously all the questions were Multiple Choice but in the year 2020, the questions included Integer Answers as well, which raised the level of difficulty and competition accordingly. 30 questions from each section were asked and only 25 are to be attempted, each question carries 4 marks with a negative mark of -1 for only MCQs.

The year 2021 was terrific with a total of four attempts for the JEE Main, the first session was held in February, the second session was held in March, the third session was held in July, and the fourth and final session was held in the last week of August and the first week of September.
