Question
Download Solution PDFInlet Pipes A and B can together fill an empty tank in 1.5 hours. Outlet Pipe C, when opened alone, can empty the completely filled tank, in 4.5 hours. When only Pipes A and C are opened together, the empty tank is filled in 6 hours. Find the time taken by Pipe B, when opened alone, to fill the empty tank.
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFCalculation:
Total work or capacity of the tank is = LCM of (1.5, 4.5, 6) = 18 unit
Efficiency of (A + B) = 18/1.5 = 12 unit
Efficiency of C = 18/4.5 = - 4 unit
Efficiency of (A - C) = 18/6 = 3
Here, C = - 4 and (A - C) = 3, then efficiency of A = (4 + 3) = 7 unit
Now, efficiency of B = (12 - 7) = 5 unit
So, B can fill the whole empty tank in = 18/5 = 3.6 hour = 3 hours 36 minutes
∴ The correct answer is 3 hours 36 minutes
