Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDF- The fusing element of a fuse is usually made of Copper.
- Fuse is the piece of wire made up of copper or an alloy of lead and tin with a low melting point.
- It is covered in a cartridge of porcelain and connected in series with the live wire at the inlet point of supply.
- It is used to interrupt an electrical current during a short circuit or overload condition.
- An electrical fuse operates on the principle of heating effect of electric current.
- During the normal operating condition, the current flowing through the fusing element is such that the rate of heat production in the fuse element is nearly equal to the rate of heat dissipation from the fuse element.
- So that there will be no considerable increase in temperature of that fuse element.
- But if the current through the fuse element crosses certain predetermined value, then the rate of production of heat is not equal to the rate of dissipation of heat and as a result, there will be a rapid increase in the temperature of fuse element and after some time it reaches to the melting point of the fuse element.
- Then the fuse element melts down and disconnects the supply from the load and saves the circuit connected through this fuse element.
- In this way, an electrical fuse protects an electrical installation from permanent damage due to overheating.
- The time required for melting the fuse element depends upon the magnitude of the current.
- If high overcurrent flows through a fuse element than more rapidly it is melted down to disconnect the supply.
