• Community development in India was initiated by the Government of India through Community Development Program (CDP) on 2 October 1952 on the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
• The focus of CDP was on rural communities.
• But, professionally trained social workers concentrated their practice in urban areas.  
• The CDP was recommended by the Fiscal Commission (1949) and the Grow More Food Enquiry Committee (1952).

• The CDP was the first major rural development and readjustment scheme that was brought by the government of India after independence.
• The CDP is a movement designed to promote better living for the whole community with the active participation and initiative of the community.
