Individual differences are caused due to differences in capacities and capabilities, potentialities and propensities, attitudes and aptitudes, interests and sentiments, temperaments and traits, age and sex, etc.

Key Points

  • The personality and aptitude of an individual are affected by two factors principally:
    • Heredity
    • Environment
  • The term intra-individual differences represent various aspects of a person i.e. differences within a person at different times or in different events. For example, attention or effort.
  • On the other hand,  inter-individual differences emphasize the diversity or differences between groups. For instance, differences in gender, age, ethnic background, etc.

From the above, we can say that if a child is average in creativity, high in academic achievement, or poor in social development. This is an example of intra-individual differences.
