Given:

Ratio of the marked price(MP) of a trouser and a jacket = 1 : 3

Discount on trouser = 20%

Total discount on both of them = 30%

Formula used:

Discount% = (Discount/MP) × 100

Calculation:

Let the MP of trouser and jacket be x and 3x

Discount on trouser = 0.2 × x = 0.2x

Total discount on both = 0.3 × (x + 3x) = 1.2x

⇒ Discount on jacket = 1.2x - 0.2x = x

Discount% on jacket = (x/3x) × 100 = 33.33

Shortcut TrickLet the discount on the jacket is x.

3x = 100

x = 33.33%

∴ Discount on jacket = 33.33%
