Total distance = 12 km

Time taken to cover the upstream distance = 1 hour

Time taken to cover the downstream distance = 45 minutes

Concept used:

Upstream speed = U - V

Downstream speed = U + V

Where, U = speed of boat in still water

and V = speed of stream

Calculation:

Upstream speed = 12/1 = 12km/h

Downstream speed = (12 × 60)/45 = 16 km/h

Speed of boat in still water (U) = (12 + 16)/2 = 28/2 = 14km/h

Speed of stream (V) = (16 - 12)/2 = 4/2 = 2 km/h
