Our skull houses a series of interconnected, hollow spaces known as sinuses. These sinuses are coated with a thin layer of tissue , also known as the mucosa, which is akin to the one found in our nasal passage. The sinuses are typically clear, except for a thin layer of mucus. They connect to the nose via a small channel.
The exact role of the sinuses is a subject of ongoing scientific debate. Some researchers suggest that they contribute to the resonance of our voice, while others propose that they aid in warming the air we inhale.
The symptoms of sinusitis become apparent when the sinus cavities become infected by microbes such as viruses , bacteria or specific chemicals. These factors trigger inflammation and stimulate the production of excessive mucus in the sinuses. The typical symptoms of sinusitis encompass:
In most cases, sinusitis resolves on its own without necessitating any medical treatment. It is recommended to maintain hydration and ensure sufficient rest during this period.
