During the British rule between 1858 and 1947, it was the 'higher civil service' of the British Empire in India.
During the British period, the 'Indian Civil Service' was formed in 1861 under the 'Indian Civil Services Act 1861'.
After this, in June 1863, Satyendranath Tagore (the first Indian) was selected.

In 1863, he was selected in the 'Indian Civil Service' examination.
Satyendranath Tagore's first appointment as an IAS officer was in 'Bombay Presidency'.
