Agrochemicals, also known as agricultural chemicals, encompass a range of substances including fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides. These are commonly used in agriculture to enhance plant growth and protect crops from pests.
While these chemicals were initially introduced to boost crop yield, their excessive application has led to serious environmental concerns. Agrochemicals can leach into the surrounding soil and water, entering the food chain and resulting in bioaccumulation.
Overuse of agrochemicals leaves behind significant amounts of residues, which can disrupt the nutrient balance and lower the quality of agricultural products. For instance, consuming food tainted with pesticide residues can potentially heighten the risk of asthma .
