There are the following types of valves:
Gate Valve
- A Gate valve is a linear motion valve that uses a typically flat closure element perpendicular to the process flow, which slides into the flow stream to provide shut-off.

Globe valve

- The direction of fluid flow through the valve changes several times, which increases the pressure drop across the valve.
Plug Valve
- They are similar to Gates and work particularly well in abrasive services.
- These are available either lubricated or non-lubricated.
Ball Valve
- Ball valves are quarter-turn, straight-through flow valves, and limited to moderate temperature service (below 250°C) by the plastic seats that create a seal around the ball.
- The type of seat can vary with the valve pressure rating and materials of construction.
- They have found applications in flow control, as well as ON/OFF use in isolating a pipe stream.
Check valve
- These valves are used to check the flow of water in the reverse direction.
- These are generally provided on the delivery side of the pump.
- These valves work automatically.
Relief Valve
- It is a type of safety valve used to control or limit the pressure in a system, pressure might otherwise build up and create a process upset, instrument or equipment failure, or fire.
- The pressure is relieved by allowing the pressurized fluid to flow from an auxiliary passage out of the system.
