- Already existing holes in the components can be further machined by counter boring as shown in the figure.
- In counter boring operations, the hole is already enlarged with a flat bottom to provide proper seating for the bolt head or a nut, which is flushed from the outer surface.
- It is also similar to counter boring, except that the additional machining done on a hole is conical to accommodate the counter sunk machine screw head.
- Again the depth of counter sinking should be large enough to accommodate the screw head to fully flush with the surface.
- Boring is an operation to enlarging of an existing hole, which may have been made by a drill or maybe the result of a core in a casting.

- It removes sufficient metal from the surface around a drilled hole to form a true seat for a bolt head or nut.
