• In general, the margin of the rivet is 1.5d
• For General-Purpose Rivets:
  • Single Shear: 1.5 x rivet diameter
  • Double Shear: 2.0 x rivet diameter
• For High-Strength Rivets:
  • Single Shear: 2.0 x rivet diameter
  • Double Shear: 2.5 x rivet diameter
• For Thin Plates (thickness less than 1/8 inch):
  • All Rivets: 1.0 x rivet diameter

The purpose of this is to prevent the splitting of the edges. 

The maximum distance from the edge should not be more than ten times the thickness of the plate.

Too much distance from the edge will lead to Gapping.

Too closely spaced rivets will tear the metal along the centerline of the rivets.
