In Freud’s view, development is a 'Discontinuous Process' as Freud believed that:
- each of us must pass through a series of stages during childhood and that if we lack proper nurturance and parenting during a stage, we may become stuck, or fixated, in that stage.
- personality gets well established during childhood, largely before the age of five years. He proposed five stages of psychosexual development which include oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital stage.

The sexual energy during this stage is channelized towards educational, sports, and social activities. This leads to no or little interest in the opposite gender. |
| Genital stage (Twelve years to adulthood) |
Successful completion of previous stages will help in developing a mature intimate relationship with the opposite sex. |
