Concept:

Inlet Velocity Triangle

  • Let V1 be the absolute velocity of the jet issuing from a nozzle and striking the vane.
  • The jet leaves the nozzle at an angle α to the horizontal, i.e. α is the angle between the direction of the jet and the direction of motion of the vane.
  • In turbomachinery, this angle is called the guide vane angle or nozzle angle.
  • The absolute velocity of the entering jet V1 may be resolved into two components; one parallel to and the other perpendicular to the motion of the vane.
  • In the velocity triangle, AD represents the component parallel to the direction of motion of the vane.
  • This component of inlet velocity is called the whirl component or tangential component and is designated by Vw1 and it is responsible for producing work in a steam turbine.
  • Also, in the triangle, DC represents the component perpendicular to the motion of the vane.
  • This component of inlet velocity is called the flow component and is designated by Vf1.

Also,

Work done per second = ρaV[Vw1u1 + Vw2u2]

Vw1,w2 = Whirl velocity at inlet and outlet

Explanation:-

  • Referring to the velocity triangle of the Steam turbine, we can say that the blade velocity "u" is kept as a common reference in both the inlet and outlet velocity triangle for drawing the velocity diagram of a steam turbine.
