The letters in the word laser stand for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.
Lasers produce a narrow beam of light in which all of the light waves have very similar wavelengths. The light produced is known as laser light.
Properties of laser light:
1.) Monochromatic
The light emitted from a laser is monochromatic, that is, it is of one wavelength (color). In contrast, ordinary white light is a combination of many different wavelengths (colors).
2.) Directional
Lasers emit light that is highly directional. Laser light is emitted as a relatively narrow beam in a specific direction.
Ordinary light, such as coming from the sun, a light bulb, or a candle, is emitted in many directions away from the source.
3.) Coherent
The light from a laser is said to be coherent, which means the wavelengths of the laser light are in phase in space and time.
4.) High intensity
Wave intensity is the energy flowing through a unit of normal area per unit of time. Light from an ordinary source spreads out in all directions.
The light of a laser is focused in a particular direction.
