There are following types of valves:
Check valve
- These valves are used to check the flow of water in the reverse direction.
- These are generally provided on the delivery side of the pump.
- These valves work automatically.
Gate Valve
- A Gate valve is a linear motion valve that uses a typically flat closure element perpendicular to the process flow, which slides into the flow stream to provide shut-off.
- With a Gate valve, the direction of fluid flow does not change, and the diameter through which the process fluid passes is essentially equal to that of the pipe.
- Hence, Gate valves tend to have minimal pressure drop when opened fully.
- In general, Gate valves are not used to regulate fluid flow.
Globe valve
- A Globe valve is a linear motion valve characterized by a body with a longer face-to-face that accommodates flow passages sufficiently long enough to ensure a smooth flow through the valve without any sharp turns.
- Globe valves are widely used to regulate fluid flow in both ON/OFF and throttling services.
- The direction of fluid flow through the valve changes several times, which increases the pressure drop across the valve.
Plug Valve
- They are similar to Gates and work particularly well in abrasive services.
- These are available either lubricated or non-lubricated.
Ball Valve
- Ball valves are quarter-turn, straight through flow valves, and limited to moderate temperature service (below 250°C) by the plastic seas that create a seal around the ball.
- The type of seat can vary with the valve pressure rating and materials of construction.
- They have found applications in flow control, as well as ON/OFF use in isolating a pipe stream.
Relief Valve
- It is a type of safety valve used to control or limit the pressure in a system, pressure might otherwise build up and create a process upset, instrument or equipment failure, or fire.
- The pressure is relieved by allowing the pressurized fluid to flow from an auxiliary passage out of the system.
Butterfly valve
- Butterfly valves are used to regulate and stop the flow especially in large-sized conduits.
- Butterfly valves involve slightly higher head loss than sluice valves and valves and also are not suitable for continuous throttling.
