Given:

In an election between two candidates, a candidate who gets 64% of the votes polled is elected by a majority of 252 votes.

Calculation:

Let the total number of votes be Q.

Losing candidate got = Q × (100 - 64)% = Q × 36%

​According to the question,

Q × (64 - 36)% = 252

⇒ Q × 28% = 252

⇒ Q = 252 ÷ 28%

⇒ Q = 900

∴ The total number of votes is 900.
