Ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad was allegedly poisoned in Moscow after he was dethroned from power in December last year.

Ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has been reportedly poisoned in Moscow. Bashar was living under the shelter of Russia from December 9 after he was removed from the presidential position by the rebels in Russia. A social media account named General SVR, which is run by a former spy in Russia had claimed that Bashar had fallen ill in Moscow on Sunday. He asked for medical help and began to ‘cough violently and choke.’ The ‘X’ account further claimed that it was a possible assassination attempt on the former Syrian president.

What Is The Whole Incident?

Reports have claimed that Bashar al-Assad was treated at his home in Moscow and his condition had stabilised by Monday. The tests that were conducted showcased a poison substance in his body, though, no official statement has been released into the matter either by Syria or by Moscow. As per a report by The Sun, the assassination attempt to kill Bashar al-Assad was made in his own apartment and has caused widespread alarm. The speculations have also started regarding the plotters of Bashar al-Assad’s assassination attempt and have raised a question does the present Syrian leadership want to kill Assad or is there any other motive behind the incident.

What Happened In Syria?

Bashar al-Assad was removed from power in Syria after being in the regime for around 14 years. The rebel group led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and were backed by allied Turkish groups. The leader of the organisation Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is Abu Mohammed al-Julani. On November 27, the coalition of opposition fighters launched an offensive attack on pro-government forces in opposition governed Idlib and three days later, Aleppo which is Syria’s second biggest city was captured by these groups. Seeing his decline, after ten days of violence and protest by the rebels, Bashar al-Assad fled from the country with his family and agreed to a peaceful transfer of power.
