Mumbai Indians Penalised Due To THIS Fielding Error – Here’s What Happened

In yesterdays IPL clash between MI and DC, Mumbai faced a no-ball penalty due to not knowing a rare rule. Here is what IPL has to say about the reason behind the penalty.

In yesterdays IPL clash between MI and DC, Mumbai faced a no-ball penalty due to not knowing a rare rule. As Will Jacks started his third delivery over number 5, he bowled to Vipraj Nigam and the umpire called the ball a no-ball. The reason was that MI had just three players in the field to the left of the umpires on the off-side.

IPL Clarifies On-Side Fielding Limit Under Match Condition 28.4.1

The odd no-ball happened in the fifth over, just after Will Jacks bowled out Abishek Porel. As a result, the next ball sent to Jacks gave a penalty against him thanks to an unusual rule in the fielding module.

As per ESPNCricinfo’s commentary, “the umpires had given the no-ball, ‘because there weren’t enough fielders on the off side’.”

Section 28.4.1 in the IPL Match Playing Conditions says there should never be more than five fielders on the on-side. “At the instant of delivery, there may not be more than 5 fielders on the on side,” reads the playing conditions.

What Happened In The MI Vs DC Match

MI was able to beat DC by 59 runs in the yesterdays clash at the Wankhede Stadium to seal the final playoff berth in IPL. As a result, DC dropped out of the tournament. After getting the initial chance to bat MI managed to score 180 for five mostly thanks to a great knock by Suryakumar Yadav. Things looked bad for MI when they kept losing wickets, but Suryakumar’s game-saving 73 off 43 balls helped contribute to a decent total when the track was tough to bat on. Mukesh Kumar took two wickets, but he allowed 48 runs during his four overs. DC was devastated when their usual captain Axar Patel couldn’t play due to illness. While defending the total, MI bowlers peformed in unison with Jasprit Bumrah (3 for 12) and Mitchell Santner (3 for 11) being the top-wicket-takers.
