In a major turn in the long-running legal fight between Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and his estranged wife Hasin Jahan, the Calcutta High Court has directed the fast bowler to cough up Rs 4 lakh every month as alimony. The court held that Shami has to give Rs 1.5 lakh every month to Jahan and Rs 2.5 lakh every month for the maintenance of their daughter.
The decision comes after over six years of legal proceedings, following allegations of domestic violence and adultery made by Jahan in 2018. While the ruling marks a major step forward in the case, Jahan expressed dissatisfaction with the amount awarded, stating in an interview with PTI that the sum does not match Shami’s high-end lifestyle or meet the rising cost of living.
“Given his way of life, Rs 4 lakh is short. We had asked for Rs 10 lakh a month initially, and the price level has increased since then. I thank Imtiaz Bhai (her lawyer) and the Hon’ble Judge for this victory, but I will keep insisting on a greater amount so that I can be able to provide better for our daughter,” remarked Jahan.
Her attorney, Imtiaz Ahmed, confirmed on Wednesday the order of the court and indicated that the amount may be enhanced during subsequent proceedings. He described that the trial court has been directed to make disposal of the main application in six months, and there’s a high likelihood the alimony could be enhanced to Rs 6 lakh a month.

Hasin Jahan went through extreme hardship between 2018 and 2024, going from pillar to post. Yesterday’s order in open court is great relief,” Ahmed said. “She initially asked for Rs 7 lakh for herself and Rs 3 lakh for her daughter in her petition. There is a likelihood the final amount will be upgraded after the trial court completes the hearing.
He also added that the court emphasized Shami’s continued responsibility toward his daughter, noting that he is expected to provide additional financial support as and when needed.
This verdict marks a pivotal moment in a contentious and high-profile legal dispute, though the final resolution may still be months away as proceedings continue.
