Dewald Brevis got his Test debut for South Africa on Saturday (June 28) against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo and scored 51 runs off 41 balls. While staying on the crease, he thrashed three fours and three sixes and reached the 50-run mark in 38 balls only by dispatching Vincent Masekesa for a six off the final delivery of the 19th over of South Africa’s first innings. In hitting his half-century in 38 balls, Brevis shattered the world record for the fastest fifty on Test debut.

Two batters have crossed the 50-run barrier in less than 38 balls in their first Test, but they did so in the second innings. On March 22-26, 2008, during the England-New Zealand Test at McLean Park in Napier, Tim Southee hammered a 29-ball half-century for the Black Caps in the 2nd innings, while England batsman Jacob Bethell reached the milestone of 50 runs with just 37 deliveries in the 2nd innings of the match played at Christchurch from November 28 to December 1, 2024, against New Zealand.
Brevis batted at No. 6 for the Proteas side on Saturday and contributed 95 runs at the fifth wicket position with Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who is making his South Africa Test debut on Saturday. The 19-year-old left-handed wicket-keeper batter has made a century for the Proteas in the first innings, and he reached the 100-run mark in 112 balls. He is the youngest South African batsman to make a century on his Test debut.
