The Punjab Kings (PBKS), under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, showed their intent for the 2025 season of IPL with a convincing seven-wicket win against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur, on Monday. The victory ensured PBKS a top-two spot on the points table something they have achieved for the first time since 2014.
Punjab Kings In Top Two
Pursuing a competitive score of 185, PBKS found it tough to find momentum early in the powerplay. But Josh Inglis and Priyansh Arya quickly grabbed the reins, forming a match-winning combination. Inglis delivered a smooth knock of 73 from 42 balls, while Arya stole the show with a mature 62 from only 35 balls, all the more impressive for an inexperienced player in his debut year. Their 109-run partnership off 59 balls turned the tide in the match, and PBKS conquered the target with ease in 18.3 overs.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer was a finisher, remaining not out on 26 from 16 balls. He finished the chase with a six off Trent Boult, which exposed Punjab’s supremacy in the match. While both MI and PBKS had already qualified for the playoffs, the game was of great importance. The victor would be assured of a top-two position, with the benefit of two opportunities to qualify for the final through Qualifier 1.
With this victory, Punjab Kings have now secured their position in Qualifier 1, to be hosted at their home venue in Mullanpur on May 29. Mumbai Indians, having fallen to third or fourth position depending on other outcomes, will play the Eliminator, to be hosted on May 30 at the same venue.
Gavaskar Praises PBKS Performance
After the match, cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar praised Punjab Kings for their clinical and level-headed performance. He singled out Priyansh Arya for demonstrating maturity beyond his years and picked out Inglis’ innings as a major momentum-changing contribution.
Here’s What Sunil Gavaskar Said
“Nobody took Punjab Kings seriously. They have picked wisely at the auction, where they got lot of young, uncapped Indian players. They have seen them. They have seen what they have done, where they have done. There are so many of these state leagues which are happening but you cant always go by what’s happening in the state leagues. The bowling attacks may not always be good.
“Even then if somebody like a Priyansh Arya hits seven sixes you know that this guy has talent. Picking the international players too. They have done it really well. Full marks to them. Really happy for them. I told you before the start of the match that a new name will be written on the trophy, well.”
One Game Left To Finalize Playoff Brackets
The complete playoff situation will be decided after the last league stage match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Tuesday. LSG are out of the playoffs contention, but RCB are in the hunt for a top-two spot based on the result.
