Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is acknowledged to have been born on February 19, 1630, in the Shivneri Fort, located near Pune. His mother, Jijabai, did much to mould him by imparting the quest for valor and self-sufficiency. Military Prowess Is Unmatchable To Date
Shivaji Maharaj was a brilliant tactician and innovator in military strategy. He invented the “Ganimi Kava” or “War of Deception,” a form of guerilla warfare that involved quick attacks, ambushes, and surprise raids against larger and more powerful adversaries.
Value Of Navy
Shivaji Maharaj realized the importance of naval strength, so he created a formidable navy for the protection of his coastal territories and to launch attacks on the enemy ships. He built several naval forts on the Konkan coast and started a navy base at Vijaydurg, thus laying the groundwork for Maratha naval power.He had a reputation for religious toleration.
Religious Tolerance
Although he was a committed Hindu, Shivaji Maharaj had a reputation for having religious toleration and for having respect for all religions. He ensured the protection and enabled the freedom to worship for people of different religions within his kingdom which won him the support and admiration of his subjects. Shivaji Maharaj also instituted many reforms in administration to ensure good governance and justice in his kingdom. He created a strong administrative framework with formal hierarchies, revenues collection, and codes of conduct for administrative officers, thereby establishing the basis for governance.
Encouragement Of Arts And Culture
Shivaji Maharaj was a supporter of the arts and culture, encouraging Marathi literature, music, and architecture in his reign. He supported the development of the Marathi language and literature, supported scholars and poets, and ordered the building of forts, temples, and monuments throughout his kingdom.
Methods Of Irrigation In Agriculture
Shivaji Maharaj understood the importance of water management for the prosperity of agriculture and suggested innovative techniques of irrigation. He constructed a number of dams, reservoirs, and water tanks to capture the rain, which secured the availability of water for farming and drinking which was not limited to monsoons.
Taxes
Shivaji Maharaj enacted proper and fair taxation systems to help his subjects and create a healthier economy. He repealed the unfair taxes of the preceding rulers and initiated a scheme of land revenue and collection based on actual crop production and land productivity.
