Tragic Bus Accident in Handwara Claims Two Lives, Injures 22 Students

The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of two promising young lives. In a statement on the social media platform X, he conveyed his condolences to the families affected by this tragedy, saying, “The loss of two young promising students from GDC Sogam is a tragedy that weighs heavily on all of us. My deepest condolences to their families in this hour of grief. Prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.” The Chief Minister assured that the government is closely monitoring the situation and has instructed relevant authorities to provide all necessary medical and logistical support.

According to officials, 22 other students sustained injuries in the accident, with most reported to be in stable condition. Medical Superintendent of Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara, Dr. Aijaz, confirmed that while two critically injured students were referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment, the remaining students are being closely monitored and are responding well to medical care.

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, visited GMC Handwara to assess the situation and interact with both injured students and hospital staff. She assured them of all possible assistance from the district administration, stating, “We are committed to ensuring the best possible medical care and support for the victims and their families.” She also confirmed that a police investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with locals and emergency services quickly arriving to assist in rescuing the injured and transporting them to the hospital.
