Wangchuk Along With 150 Others Was Detained

Wangchuk and 150 other protesters were detained by the Delhi Police at the Singhu border on Monday night while trying to enter the national capital for their ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra.’

Delhi Police claimed that they detained the Ladakh-based climate activist since the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Section 163 still existed at the Delhi borders till October 6.

Sonam Wangchuk said, “We had some challenges when we reached Delhi due to detention, but everything happens for a reason. We are elated that our message about environmental conservation went to the most people. We have requested the government to provide constitutional protections for Ladakh to save the Himalayas.”

Why Sonam Wangchuk Started March?

Since September 1, Wangchuk and other volunteers from Leh started walking towards New Delhi. They are demanding the resumption of talks by the government with Ladakh’s leadership on their demands. Among their demands is to include Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the constitution, which shall vest the lawmaking authority in the local people to protect their land and culture.
