Severe Flooding In Varanasi May Force Cremations Onto Streets

Heavy rains have caused the River Ganga to overflow in Varanasi, flooding cremation platforms and forcing potential relocations of services to streets.

Heavy rains in Uttar Pradesh have caused the River Ganga to overflow in Varanasi, resulting in severe flooding at the Mahashamshan Ghat. The rising water levels have submerged the steps along the banks, damaged connecting roads, and flooded the cremation platforms at both Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats. This situation has left the cremation platforms underwater, forcing residents to find alternative arrangements for performing last rites.

Given the current conditions, there is a possibility that cremations may need to be conducted in the streets of Harishchandra Ghat if the water levels do not recede soon. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and preparing contingency plans to address the escalating crisis.

Nitesh Yadav, a wood vendor for cremations at Manikarnika Ghat, reported that the water levels of the River Ganga have risen significantly over the past 2 to 3 days, submerging the cremation platform at Manikarnika Ghat. This rise in water has worsened the space issues on the ghat, making it increasingly difficult for families to perform last rites. Yadav cautioned that if the water level keeps rising, the situation will likely deteriorate, making cremation efforts even more difficult.

If the water level continues to rise, cremations at Harishchandra Ghat, currently being conducted on the stairs, may need to be relocated to the streets. Kalicharan, a cremation service provider, reported that due to the flooding, people are currently experiencing delays of up to 1.5 hours for cremation services.

The Central Water Commission reports that the River Ganga’s water level in Varanasi has been stable since Thursday morning.. As of 8 am, the river’s water level is recorded at 63.86 metres, which is approximately 7 metres below the danger mark of 71.26 metres. The warning point for the river is set at 70.26 metres.
