In a landmark ruling, a Delhi court has delivered its first conviction under the newly introduced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). On Saturday, Delhi police officials reported that a 20-year-old man named Neeraj was found guilty of theft under the new laws, which came into effect on July 1, 2024.

The Case and Conviction

Neeraj, a resident of Shakarpur, was charged with theft for stealing jewelry and valuables from a house in Rohini’s Budh Vihar area. The case was registered on July 9 under sections 305(A), 332(C), and 3(5) of the BNS. The police were able to identify Neeraj as the culprit through CCTV footage, leading to his arrest the following day.

During the trial, the Rohini court found sufficient evidence to convict him, sentencing Neeraj to three months in prison. This marks the first conviction under the BNS in Delhi, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini), G.S. Sidhu.

This case signifies the enforcement of the new criminal laws in India and sets a precedent for future trials under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
