Rescue and Evacuation Operations in Full Swing

Heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Dana caused flash floods in the districts of Balasore and Bhadrak, where local rescue teams have been working to evacuate residents. Over 8 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas, with around 1.1 lakh currently staying in relief shelters. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi stated that these shelters will continue to provide cooked meals and support until water levels recede.

Power Restoration and Infrastructure Repairs Underway

As part of its rapid response, the state government has managed to restore electricity to 92% of affected households. The administration is focusing on rebuilding infrastructure in the worst-hit districts, including Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, and Mayurbhanj. The Odisha government’s rehabilitation efforts prioritize critical areas while conducting damage assessments, especially of farmlands impacted by the flooding.

Preparations and Preventive Measures

Ahead of the cyclone’s impact, evacuation drives in Balasore and Mayurbhanj helped limit casualties. The Budhabalang River’s rising water level prompted the government to move residents to safer locations as a preventive measure.

Impact on West Bengal and Crop Damage Concerns

In neighboring West Bengal, while Kolkata saw relief with clearer skies, several areas in Hooghly, Bankura, Jhargram, and the Medinipur districts remain waterlogged, affecting farmlands and crops, including paddy and potatoes. Although water is receding, isolated heavy rain may continue in some districts.

As efforts continue, both Odisha and West Bengal governments are focused on providing relief, aiding affected communities, and assessing agricultural damages to support recovery.
