Election Commission Revises Haryana Assembly Poll Dates To Honour Bishnoi Festival

The Election Commission received representations from the All India Bishnoi Mahasabha based in Rajasthan's Bikaner and decided to accept their demand to reschedule the voting day in Haryana.

Haryana Assembly Elections: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has rescheduled the polling day for Haryana from October 1 to October 5, 2024. Accordingly, the counting day for Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana Assembly Polls has been moved from October 4 to October 8. This adjustment in polling date is made to honor both the voting rights and the Bishnoi Festival.

ECI Accepts Bishnoi Community’s Demand

After the Election Commission received representations from the All India Bishnoi Mahasabha based in Rajasthan’s Bikaner, it decided to accept their demand and reschedule the voting day in Haryana. The Bishnoi group emphasized that for generations people from Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana have been observing the tradition of visiting the village of Mukam in Rajasthan during “Amavas” in the month of “Asoj”, in memory of their Guru Jambheshwar.

BJP Seeks Change In Haryana Polling Date

The Haryana BJP had previously written to the Election Commission requesting a change or shift in the the Haryana Assembly Poll Date. They have cited holidays before and after October 1 as an essential reason for requesting the postponement. However, Congress took a major dig at the BJP’s bid, calling it a defeatist move.

The Election Commission announced on August 16 that Haryana will vote in a single phase on October 1. The result for the 90 seats was scheduled to be announced on October 4, 2024. Haryana BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli wrote a letter to the Election Commision highlighting that October 1 may see fewer voters at polling booths if go on vacations before and after the scheduled polling date. He had asked the poll body to fix a new date for Haryana Assembly Elections 2024.
