Alia Bhatt recently appeared at the re-release party of the 1980s classic film Umrao Jaan and expressed her love towards the veteran actress Rekha. Following the movie, Alia made an Instagram post and calls Rekha a living legend and wrote, “There never, was, is or will ever be another like you, ReMaa.”
Alia has shared some pictures and videos of the event as well. One of the heart touching pictures is where Rekha is seen with her arm resting on Alia as they make this pose together and they are both smiling warmly. Alia attended the event wearing a blush pink saree and looked beautiful. On camera, the two actresses had a sweet moment.
In her caption, Alia wrote, “An ode to a living legend… there never, was, is or will ever be another like you, ReMaa.”

Umrao Jaan is a period musical drama released in 1981, and it was adapted by the inventor of Urdu Novel Mirza Hadi Ruswa, his book in 1899 named Umrao Jaan Ada. It is a novel that narrates the life of a tawaif and poet of Lucknow and her rise to stardom. The movie is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of India, and it received 4 awards in the 29th National Film Awards, including the Best Actress Award to Rekha.
On June 2, filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, who directed Umrao Jaan claimed in a tweet that the film was restored in 4K resolution. The re-release of a big screen began on June 27.
Ali also launched a special coffee table book during the event. This is a special book which recounts some of the backstage scenes behind the creation of Umrao Jaan. It also contains unseen photographs, costume illustrations, poetry, calligraphy and personal narration on the set of the film. The book has been characterized as a collector item and an emotional appreciation to the artistic integrity of the movie.
Muzaffar Ali mentioned, “Umrao Jaan was not just a film, it was a journey into the soul of a lost culture, a forgotten tehzeeb. I had actors who brought a lot of heft to their characters, and then there was Rekha, who lived Umrao Jaan and truly immortalised it. I am thrilled that the film is back on the big screen for a whole new generation to discover a time and culture that’s very much a part of our being.”
This re-release is a tribute to one of the timeless movies and to an iconic actress who made the role iconic.
