UPSC CSE Prelims 2025: Check Date, Exam Format, And Marking Scheme Explained

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) Prelims 2025 is scheduled for May 25, 2025.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will hold the Civil Services Preliminary Examination on Sunday, May 25. Candidates who have filled out the application form for the exam can now download their e-admit cards from the official website upsconline.gov.in detailed. The examination will be held in two shifts: Paper 1 (General Studies): 9.30 am to 11.30 am and Paper 2 (CSAT)- 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

Candidates who wish to take the exam must produce a printed copy of their e-admit card and a valid photo ID card listed in the admit card when they arrive to the exam centre. Candidates will not be permitted to write the examination if they do not produce these documents. The UPSC has also advised candidates to read through the instructions printed on the admit card so they are not confused at the last moment.

UPSC CSE Prelims 2025

Screening Test Only, and Not Counted for Final Merit. The prelims exam is a “screening” test only. Marks obtained in this exam will not count towards the final merit list. Only candidates who pass the prelims will be qualified to take the Main exam; the marks of which are important in deciding a candidate’s final rank.

Exam Pattern And Papers

1. The preliminary examination consists of two papers of objective type, both 200 marks

2. General Studies Paper I: Containing history, geography, polity, economics and current events and developments in science and technology.

3. General Studies Paper-II (CSAT): Comprehension, logic, and analytical ability.

4. The question papers are prepared in Hindi and English, and the duration of each of the two papers is two hours

5. The CSAT paper is of qualifying nature, so each candidate will have to obtain a minimum pass mark of 33% to allow their qualification into the next stage of the assessment.

Negative Marking

1. All candidates should note that wrong answers will be subject to negative marking:

2. A mark of one-third of the total marks allotted to a question will be deducted for every wrong answer.

3. If more than one option is selected it will be treated as a wrong answer, even if one of the options is correct.

4. No marks will be deducted for questions which remain unanswered.
