Centre Sets Up 9-Member Panel To Curb Rising Coaching Dependency Among Students

In response to the growing reliance on private coaching among students, the Central Government has established a nine-member expert panel.

In a groundbreaking move to makeover the education ecosystem, the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education has formed a 9-member expert committee to tackle the growing concern of students’ dependency on coaching centres. This committee will identify system gaps and provide recommendations on actionable strategies to address coaching dependency and improve the standards of formal education.

Committee Membership

The committee will be chaired by Vinet Joshi, Secretary, Higher Education and will consist of:
Chairman, CBSE
Joint Secretary (Institutional), Department of School Education & Literacy (DoSEL)
Representative of IIT Madras
Representative of NIT Tiruchirappalli
Representative of IIT Kanpur
Representative of NCERT
Joint Secretary(HE), Department of Higher Education- Member Secretary, and Principals of schools, one each from:

Kendriya Vidyalaya
Navodaya Vidyalaya
A Private School (to be appointed by Secretary, DoSEL)

Key Focus Areas-

The committee will conduct a holistic review of the following:

Identifying the current gaps in the school education system that prompt students to seek external coaching.
Understanding the role and effects of formative assessment in schools and higher education.
Understanding the increasing aspiration for quality higher education in light of the limited number of seats in premier institutions.
Understanding students’ and parents’ awareness on career opportunities other than the usual skills and jobs.
Examining the fairness and effectiveness of the competitive entrance exam system.
Reviewing the marketing/advertising policies of academic coaching centres.
Understanding the access and effects of career counselling services in schools and colleges.

The committee will submit progress reports to the Union Minister of Education every month to ensure the monitoring of recommendations and actions.

This is an important step towards a more equal, stress free and quality education system for children across the country.
